I've been wondering how many words Owen has been saying, so I sat down and wrote them all out. It is amazing how many words he knows already and he seems to add a new one every day!
Daddy, Mommy (just this week!), up, hot, car, truck, bus, house, light, more, bath, cat, dog, bird, cow, puppy, fish, shoes, socks, flush, tree, keys, cheese, milk, boom, yes, ears, mouth, head
As far as signing goes, so far the signs he knows are: milk, more, hat, finished, sleep, airplane, eat, hot, cereal, bus, car. And of those, he only uses the signs for more, eat, and milk on a regular basis. But I am sticking with it, because I think it's so fun and he likes it too!

Swimmin' on a Sunday
It was a dreary Sunday here, so after church we decided to take Owen swimming at the Rec center. I decided to sit this one out and play photographer instead. Unfortunately, I made the crucial mistake of forgetting to put the memory card back into the DSLR camera after uploading them to my laptop and thus we were stuck taking pictures with our point-and-shoot.
He hasn't been swimming for about 5 months, but he picked right up where he left off and was splashing up a storm. Ben's eyes loved this.
They practiced backstroke for a few minutes:
Then it was time for Owen to really get his face wet.
You guessed it. I had a mini-heart attack and yelled to Ben that he needed to stay closer to him.
Ben didn't listen to me ~ here's the proof:
But hey, at least they were having fun, right???
Then they did the slide about 10 times. Owen got so brave that Ben would let go of him and he would land under water at the bottom of the slide before Ben would quickly scoop him up. So fun!
In true terrible 2's fashion, we had a mini-tantrum upon pulling Owen away from the pool. However, it was short-lived, thank goodness. We went home to have lunch and a nap and then spent the remainder of the afternoon watching football and relaxing in our pj's. What a nice way to spend a Sunday. :)

Playground tease and first big tantrum
Ben got home from work a little early, so he had the brilliant idea that we should take Owen to the park for some fresh air. We packed up and headed out. Once there we were greeted by a completely empty playground.
We had forgotten Owen's hat and mittens, and I had neglected to bundle him up since we were in a rush to get out the door. So we put up his hood to try to keep his little head warm.
After about 15 minutes we were all freezing (no wonder no one else was there!), so Ben and I made the executive decision to head home. Owen was not very happy about this decision. He reluctantly walked back to the car holding Ben's hand, but the minute we tried to get him into his carseat, the screaming cries started. It was a long 5-minute drive home. The terrible 2's have decided to emerge and we're only at 16 months folks.
Luckily, the second we got home, Owen turned back into our sweet, smiling, happy little boy and began playing with his toys.

Balance and bus
Owen is obsessed with buses lately. He says "bus" constantly. Most of the time it is because he sees a bus, but sometimes he just says it because I guess he just loves the word.
I tried to get a video of him playing with his toy bus, but he was more interested in balancing a block on his head.

Musical instrument set from Erica & Greg!
Owen was SO excited (as you can tell from his face!) to open the gift Erica and Greg gave us last night. After breakfast this morning we gave it to him and he immediately started making music! He is going to be the next DAVE MATTHEWS if you ask me. :)
Thank you so much Erica & Greg! We'll burn you a CD soon which I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to every day.

Blogiversary
Today is our blogiversary! Exactly two years ago today I started this blog as a way to keep our family and friends informed of our pregnancy. After Owen was born it turned into his online baby book. We've recorded so many memories here and look forward to continuing it for many years to come.

Winery Saturday
Today we packed a picnic lunch and drove out to Hidden Brook and Lost Creek. We had a nice time relaxing and enjoying a glass of Summertime (one of Lost Creek's whites).
(I stole this collage idea from Andrea who always makes awesome collages for her baby blog: Hertel News. I hope she doesn't mind.)
Owen napped on the short drive home. We were lucky enough to have Grandma and Grandpa Marshall come over and babysit so that we could go out to dinner with Greg and Erica.

Owen is signing!
I had tried Baby Sign Language with Owen when he was around 6 months old, but didn't stick with it very long. Out of curiosity, I reintroduced it to him and he picked it up right away!
He's only doing two right now ~ eat and more. It's so cute!
I'm trying to catch it on video. Maybe tonight during dinner. Stay tuned!
1/15/10 - UPDATE: I shot this video this morning at breakfast. After he ate, he was able to (with prompting) sign for milk! (Unfortunately, my camera battery was dead, so I couldn't get it on camera. Next time, definitely.) YAY for baby signs!

Mister Independent
Just this week Owen has started to assert his independence. Before this week he would grab a book and crawl into your lap to be read a story. Now, he grabs a book and climbs into his chair at his little table and reads himself a story! And if you try to get him to sit in your lap so you can read to him, he won't have it. This makes me a little sad. I hope it is just a phase.
The other thing that he's started to do on his own is brush his teeth at night. I'll start the process, but he'll quickly start yelling so that I hand over the toothbrush to him. I have to help of course, but he's getting the hang of it.
My baby is growing up too fast!!!
Here are some pictures from today. We didn't stay outside for that long because it was pretty cold.
Owen decided to take his shoe off.
I said, "Owen, put your shoe back on your foot." This is what he did.
The drool never ends. (Hopefully someday!)
We'd like to send a shout out to Uncle Mike who is the big 3-0 today! Happy Birthday Mike!!!

Talking up a storm lately
Owen is constantly amazing us with his ever-expanding vocabulary. So far he says the following words:
~ truck
~ bus
~ cheese (his favorite food)
~ shoes
~ socks
~ light
~ ears
~ boom
~ ma (his word for milk)
~ Da for Ben (he doesn't quite know ma-ma yet for me) :(
He understands a ton more words, but those are the ones he actually says on a regular basis.
Tonight he added another word to this list. I came home from church to see Owen covered in mac 'n cheese. Daddy's attempt at feeding him resulted in most of the macaroni stuck between Owen and his highchair. It was his bedtime, so I said to Owen, "Are you read to go take a bath?". He looked right at me and said, "bath?". It was beyond cute.
We made several attempts to capture him saying it in a video clip, but were not successful. Hopefully we'll be able to catch the next word since new ones are coming out of his mouth every day!
